5 Steps to Prepare for a New Year’s Detox
Every new year, thousands (if not millions) set a resolution to have a healthier lifestyle. Of course no healthy lifestyle is complete without a healthy diet, and it’s tempting to start the new year with a post-holiday detox that helps you lose the pounds and kick start your pursuits to eating better.
Sounds like a good idea, right? Nothing like jumping right in.
While New Year’s detoxes come with good intentions, the results may be less than desirable. Going straight from cookies and cocktails to cleansing and detoxing can lead to feeling downright terrible. This can not only make you less likely to stick with your resolution, it’s also really taxing on your body and can end up making you sicker than before you started.
When you detox, you are prompting the body to release and eliminate toxic build up. But after drinking more alcohol, eating more sugar, and likely not having a typical healthy diet and lifestyle during the stress and activities of the holidays, your body isn’t really ready to handle the extra load of the detoxification process. Your body can still release stored toxins, but rather than neutralizing and eliminating things properly, those toxins can end up stuck in your body in a dangerous and more active form. As you can imagine, these active toxins can wreak havoc and cause your body to do whatever it takes to fight them off, leaving you feeling tired, weak, and sick.
Definitely not ideal and NOT a good way to start your year.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t detox at all, it just means you should prepare yourself for a detox so it does what it’s designed to do….help you feel BETTER! About two weeks prior to detoxing, you should take steps to prepare your body. Then you’ll be set and ready to do a program like the You Are Well 10 Day Digestive Detox to reset your health. (Read on to find out how you can get this detox for free.)
Here are 5 manageable steps you can take to set yourself up for a successful detox.
1. Cut sugar out of your diet
Depending on how much indulging you did during the holiday season, cutting our sugar is likely to feel like a detox of its own. This is an important step, so don’t skip it! You can ween down slowly but be sure you’ve removed all added sugars from your diet at least 5-7 days prior to starting a detox.
2. Choose your beverages wisely
Hydration is essential to proper detoxification. During the holiday season, we often consume more alcohol, sugary drinks, and caffeine, all of which can inhibit our natural detoxification processes. Removing those beverages and replacing them with water and herbal teas is a great way to prepare your body for a detox.
3. Eat lots of vegetables
Vegetables are packed with nutrients that are naturally detoxifying, plus they are high in fiber, which is another essential element for a healthy and successful detox. You should be consuming at least 5 servings of fibrous vegetables each day! It may seem hard to eat that much, but if you include more vegetables during breakfast and lunch, you’ll easily get the 5 servings you need.
Exercise can help your body detox by improving blood flow, oxygen delivery, and lymphatic flow. And sweating is one way your body can eliminate toxins. Starting an exercise regime prior to beginning a detox gets your body ready so the process is easier and more effective. Additionally, if you’re new to exercising, your body may need additional recovery time, you may want to take additional time to adapt before starting a detox as detoxification can make it difficult to recover from muscle soreness.
One of the most important things you can do during a detox is rest! Much of your natural detoxification happens when you sleep, so if you aren’t getting enough sleep or are over stressing your body, a portion of the detoxification process can be inhibited. Resting up prior to and throughout a detox is critical to maximizing the results.
As tempting as it can be to jump right into your detox, remember that the preparation phase is equally as important as the detox itself. You’ll start to feel better just taking these 5 steps, and your detox is likely to be much more manageable!
